A Cultural Composite: graphic arts, music and fashion

The experience – NOLA style

It hasn’t really hit me – I won’t lie - but tomorrow I, along with the rest of the South Side Sanctuary Crew, will be taking over New Orleans to celebrate our love of music, the Halloween holiday, and this year’s VooDoo Experience. VooDoo, as my eimage001steemed colleagues have laid out over the last two weeks, is a festival taking place in New Orleans’ City Park this weekend, combining all things music, art, culture, and greatness. I’ve been to several different festivals, but from what I hear, VooDoo truly is an “experience” unlike any other. Art installations fill the park. There are marching bands weaving through the crowds constantly. One of the stages is a CIRCUS TENT. Are you kidding me? How could this be labeled anything other than an EXPERIENCE.

I’m sure I’m not alone in admitting that when I hear this, I think of Jimi Hendrix and wonder if my weekend will resemble something close to that. Do not mistake me, I’m not equating seeing Eminem to witnessing this guitar master. I am also not hypothesizing that my weekend will embody an LSD-fueled day rage (yes, this is what I imagine seeing Jimi live would be like). All I know is that when I step through those gates, I’m anticipating an encounter unlike any other.

My Picks (in no particular order):

The Black Keys, The Flaming Lips, Black Lips, JUSTICE, Dan Dyer, Silversun Pickups, The Cool Kids, KISS, Janelle Monae, Wolfmother, GEORGE EFFIN’ CLINTON, Mates of State, Brand New (9th grade dream fulfilled), and K’Naan
